Have not cultivated our fields for three years: Guirim farmers

Accuse highway contractor of failing to clear mud dumped in the fields after completing the work

MAPUSA:  Complaining that for the past three years they have not cultivated their fields, which are flooded with rainwater, farmers from Guirim on Thursday accused the highway contractor of failing to clear the mud dumped in the fields despite completing the highway expansion work.

Around 50 farmers complained that due to flooding, they are unable to enter the fields and added that the main nullah passing through the fields has been blocked as the free flow of water has stopped.

The farmers said, “One hand government is calling upon the people to cultivate their fields while on the other, it is ignoring the issues faced by farmers at the ground level.”

“It’s been three years in the name of development the government is destroying the people’s livelihood. Complaints were made to concerned authorities last year and this year too but the department failed to take action”, a farmer claimed.

“How will Niz Goenkars, who are completely dependent on agriculture, survive? In the last three years, nothing has been cultivated on account of flooding,” another farmer complained.

Guirim farmers have demanded the government and concerned authorities find a solution to the problem and if possible level the land as this is their only source of livelihood.
