PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has directed the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), Directorate of Panchayats and the authorities concerned to process applications filed by panchayats for setting up Material Facility within 15 days.
The direction on Wednesday was issued based on a suo motu Public Interest Litigation taken up in 2007 over garbage management in the State.
In its submission before the bench, Sarpanch of Betalbatim village panchayat stated that they will file applications within 15 days before authorities like Director of Panchayat, GSPCB seeking permission to set up the facility and during this period, no fresh construction licenses will be granted.
According to government figures disclosed in August 2019, 161 village panchayats have identified land for setting up the facility where biodegradable and non-bio degradable waste would be treated.
