Heart attack deaths rise 18% in 5 years:Doctor

Manipal Hospitals and GUJ organise programme for media on World Heart Day

PANJIM: Despite rising quality and state-of-the-art cardiac related services in the State, Goa has witnessed a rising trend of deaths by heart attack in the last five years.
Total lives lost due to heart attack were 1855 in 2013 while the figure rose to 2190 in 2017, informed Dr Shekhar Salkar.
The number of deaths due to cardiac arrest has increased by 335 which is 18 per cent in five years.
He was speaking at the World Heart Day awareness programme for media persons at Manipal Hospitals.
Manipal Hospitals in collaboration with the Goa Union of Journalists organised a “Heart Smart Training Programme” exclusively for the members of the media.
Every year 17.9 million people die from CVD, including heart disease and stroke. Current projections suggest that India is having largest cardiovascular disease burden in the world. India is currently witnessing nearly two million heart attacks a year and majority of the victims are youngsters.
The programme had around 30 journalists as participants who underwent a thorough check-up for blood pressure, sugar and ECG. The check-up session was followed by an extensive presentation on the heart and a practical session on basic life saving measures by Dr Misha Sethi, ICU in-charge at Manipal hospital, Dona Paula.
