Heavy downpour turns Arambol roads into ‘nullahs’

Motorists drive through waist deep water as files for constructing drainages shunted from PWD to panchayat office

ARAMBOL: The heavy downpour that lashed Arambol submerged the roads and have turned them into nullahs. Roads, especially from Tintho to Keri, had gone completely under water on Tuesday and Wednesday making it difficult for the motorists to negotiate their way through the waters.

The road from Harmal Ganeshotsav hall to the Bank of India was inundated as there were no drainages on either side of the road.

“The water was at least a foot deep which made it almost impossible for the motorists to pass through. Later, a local Dabholkar created a path through his land for the water to subside. The road is uneven and since there is no gutter system, there is no way for the water to get absorbed into the ground,” said a local motorist.

“PWD engineers have inspected this 80-meter stretch multiple times to construct a gutter. The panchayat floated the tender for the same but then decided to get the work done from PWD. The file keeps moving between the PWD and the panchayat office,” said the panchayat secretary.

“Around 80 to 100 meters of road has caved in which is why water accumulates here. It is possible to raise the surface level of the road to avoid this problem. Panch Sushant Gaude tried to resolve this issue but the work had to be halted due to lack of funds,” said engineer Gawas.

Gawas had intimated the issue to MLA Jit Arolkar during one his visits to the village and Arolkar had promised to raise the level of the roads as well as to build a gutter system through MLA fund after monsoon.
