PANJIM: The heavy and continuous rainfall witnessed on Saturday led to massive traffic jams on major highways of the State.
With the tourist season underway and a surge of visitors, there was traffic congestion on various points of the Mapusa to Panjim highway with the Porvorim road being worst affected.
Elsewhere, with the Pilar feast also on Saturday and one arm of the Goa Velha bypass towards Margao shut for traffic due to ongoing highway construction work, the old road from Goa Velha to Agassaim saw vehicles stuck for more than an hour.
From devotees, to locals, to people going for weddings or just generally travelling in both directions, there was extremely slow movement of vehicles. Traffic police were seen braving the rainfall and directing traffic to the best of their ability.
However, the traffic block ensured that the queue on the Goa Velha side had reached Siridao.
