MARGAO: Heavy rains in the last few days have once exposed the deficiency of sewerage network, with the sewage chambers overflowing in several parts of Raia village and few other locations in Margao and Navelim.
Taking serious note of the issue, residents of Arlem-Raia have threatened to ‘gherao’ the officials of the sewerage department if overflowing of sewage chambers is not stopped immediately.
As per the information shared by local residents, water has been gushing out from a sewage chamber for the last few days at Arlem. Similarly, residents of Aquem and Colmorod-Navelim too have complained about the issue. Sewage water gushing out from the chambers due to the heavy rains poses severe health risks for the people.
It is pertinent to note that similar situations were reported last year and as a result residents had to face a lot of inconvenience.
Speaking to O Heraldo, Rosario Fernandes, a resident of Arlem said that the site where the water was gushing out from sewage chambers is a residential area.
“We fear that water may enter into the houses over here. It will definitely result in health hazards if not stopped immediately,” Fernandes said.
Similar situation was noticed at Aquem and Navelim, wherein
residents blamed the authorities for not taking adequate measures, despite knowing the fact that it is an annual feature witnessed in the monsoon.
“It looks like the rain water is getting mixed with the sewage water and gushing out from the chambers. This shows that the work related to laying of the sewage network was not done properly,” said Philip Dias, a resident of Navelim.
