PANJIM: The rightwing Hindu organizations in the state have demanded ban on sale of plastic flags during Republic Day, January 26.
In a memorandum submitted to North and South Goa district administrations, organizations like Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, Sanatan Sanstha and Gomantak Mandir and Dhaarmik Sanstha Mahasangh have asked to ban sale of plastic flags as they are an ‘affront’ to national flag.
“The plastic national flags, badges, stickers are used on a large scale on the occasion of the Republic Day. They are seen strewn over on roads, in filthy places, after the day is over, even before the day is over sometimes. This is a very serious matter as the reputation of the country is at stake,” the memorandum reads.
HJS is striving very hard constitutionally and creating awareness among the people, since last 9 years to stop the use of plastic for manufacturing flags.
The organizations pointed out that the state Environment Minister Alex Sequeira during the Winter Session of the Legislative Assembly, in 2009 had assured to ban the sale of plastic flag. Accordingly, the directions were issued, but were not implemented largely.
