Historic places to be declared as protected sites: CM

The monuments, which are currently maintained by the respective local bodies, will be handled by the department.

PORVORIM: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Monday assured the House to notify places of historic importance, like those significant to Goa’s Liberation movement, including the Chieftains memorial at Cuncolim.

Sawant said that all historic places will be brought under the ambit of the State Archaeology Department and will be declared as protected sites. 

He said that the monuments, which are currently maintained by the respective local bodies, will be handled by the department, post notification. 

Congress MLA Yuri Alemao had raised the issue, expressing surprise that places of historic importance such as the Chieftains Memorial at Cuncolim, Lohia Maidan at Margao, Azad Maidan in Panjim, Martyrs Memorial at Assolna and Patradevi, among various other memorials, monuments and places related to Goa’s revolution movement and Goa’s Liberation movement were not notified by the government. 

Alemao brought to the notice of the House that the sanctity of these places need to be protected and said that there is urgent need to notify them.

Meanwhile, Archaeology Minister Subhash Phal Desai said that the government intends to reconstruct some places of worship and religious monuments in the State.
