HJS wants govt to outline policy on religious structures

The Hindu Jangjagran Samiti has called upon the government to come out with a clear-cut policy on religious structures in public places by taking the concerned people into confidence.
At a meeting held in the city here on Thursday evening to bring about awareness on the government’s move to raze down places of worship in public places, the Samiti called upon the Hindu masses to unit and raise one voice in support of the demand to work out a policy on religious structures.
Samiti President Jayesh Thali contended that the list compiled by the government is bogus and lacks credibility. In this connection, he cited the instance of the 500-year old Mahadev Temple at Tambi Surla and wondered how this temple can be considered as illegal.
He pointed out that the government should go slow given the sensitive nature of the matter. Saying that many temples were razed down during the Portuguese era, besides the desecration of the 35 temples across Goa in recent times, he wondered whether the government would now go ahead and demolish existing temples in the state.
The meeting decided to draft a memorandum carrying the sentiments of the Hindu community and submit the same to the government for action.
