PANJIM: Vigilance Department has asked the Under Secretary Home to take necessary action on the demand made by advocate Aires Rodrigues to appoint a Special Public Prosecutor in the power scam case in which the main accused is Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho.
Additional Director Vigilance, Dr S P Goltekar, forwarded to Home Department the representation made by Rodrigues to the Chief Secretary seeking a Special Public Prosecutor be appointed in the case which is set to commence on June 15 before the North Goa Principal Sessions Judge.
In the letter to the Chief Secretary, Rodrigues had pointed out that as the complainant in the case Manohar Parrikar is now the Chief Minister and the accused is a member of Parrikar’s cabinet, there was apprehension that the two could derail the due process of law.
Stating that any act of corruption is a serious crime against the State and those politically well connected cannot be allowed to go free, Rodrigues in his letter stated that the government should prove its bonafides by appointing a Special Public Prosecutor in this case.
On January 17 this year while disposing Godinho’s petition that was pending before the Supreme Court for over a decade, SC upheld the High Court order directing framing of charges and declined to give any relief to Godinho.
