VALPOI & BICHOLIM: On Friday, the Employee’s Union of SESA Corporation have begun a hunger strike at Bicholim which will continue till June 30. Around hundred employees present demanded that the Government should start mining immediately in Goa.
It’s two and half months now since mining was banned in Goa, and till the date the Government has not taken any action on this issue, say the workers. The Government is also not showing any positive hopes that mining will start in Goa soon, the workers alleged.
“We demand the Government to resume mining in Goa immediately. And also we are requesting the other mining belt people to start hunger strike in their respective areas, otherwise the Government will not wake up, the workers appealed.
“We have been forced to make this strike to make the Government aware of the problems we are facing after the mining ban. And if the Government is not taking any action then we will continue our protests along with our families,” says Nilesh Karbotkar, the President Sesa union, Goa.
The General Secretary of the association, Kishor Lokre said the government is not keen in solving their issue and so they have started with the agitation.
“We will give them one month’s time and if the issue is not resolved by June 30 we will resort to a chain hunger strike from July 1,” Lokre said.
