CANACONA: Members of a newly formed NGO, Swabhimani Jagruth Cankonkars (SJC) confronted assistant director of transport, Canacona over fitments of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) san the electronic chip which can trace the vehicles in case of thefts.
Concerned with the allegations from various quarters over fitments of new number plates with only a superficial hologram and not with the mandatory electronic chip by the authorized dealer, members of SJC took the assistant director of transport Kishore Lotlikar to task.
Unable to justify the allegations of the group members, Lotlikar told media that the HSRP fitting in Canacona will be temporarily put on hold till he gets directives from his superiors.
Speaking to the media Jana Bhandari, Vikas Bhagat and Vishant Prabhu alleged that the new number plates should come fitted with a chip and in case of any thefts of vehicles the police should be able to trace the vehicle, but the ones fitted by the authorised dealer in Canacona has only a hologram which is absolutely not as per the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) specifications.
“This move to fit High Security Registration Plates to motor vehicles is to curb vehicle theft and enable easier tracking of lost and stolen vehicles,” they said.
“There are at least two vehicles stolen in Canacona which were fitted with HSRP; the authorities can’t locate or trace them since there is no electronic chip which otherwise makes it possible to trace the stolen vehicle,” Vikas Bhagat said.
