PERNEM: A huge landslide on both sides of NH 66 caused the protection walls on either side to collapse at Naibag-Poraskade, on Tuesday.
A huge mountain of boulders and mud came down, tearing down the protection walls on both sides. This is the third time that the landslide has taken place and the protection walls have collapsed within few weeks, due to heavy downpour. On Tuesday traffic was again diverted via the old highway, till the road was cleared.
The walls had collapsed for the second time on Monday, due to a landslide at Naibag and a huge boulder was leaning precarious against the protection wall at Dhargal. When the first landslide happened a week ago, four people from Maharashtra had a lucky escape with the landslide occurred in front of their moving vehicle, while one boulder bounced inches over their car. Fortunately, no one was injured in any of the three incidents.
The Opposition Congress delegation had visited the site on Monday after the second landslide. They demanded the blacklisting of MVR constructions who are contractors for the road. They also demanded that the government file an FIR against the contractor. The Congress MLAs assured to raise the issue in the Budget Session of Goa Assembly.
Locals too have stated that multiple accidents have occurred on this highway since it is unsafe and badly constructed, especially in terms of alignment. Earlier, they have also decried the poor quality of work, said hill cutting is steep and could collapse anytime. They had also pointed out that the thickness of the protection wall was not adequate to hold the boulders and mud, which they suspected would come down during the rains.
