MARGAO: The State government has informed the High Court that the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH) in Margao will be operational by the end of May 2024.
The HC was also informed that the Intensive Care Unit (ITU) is expected to start on May 30, 2024. The Advocate General (AG) submitted to the HC that the ICU is fully equipped with necessary medical apparatus, and the government has initiated recruitment efforts through advertisements to secure the services of consultants, medical officers, nursing staff, and technicians.

Previously operational during the pandemic, the nine-bedded ICU and ITU were temporarily closed as staff returned to the Goa Medical College (GMC)after the pandemic subsided.
This matter was taken up based on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that was filed by GOA Forward Party (GFP) President and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai which highlighted the inadequate facilities at SGDH, urging prompt action to operationalize the ICU and ITU.
It may be recalled that the Director of Health Services (DHS) had recently started taking steps to recruit personnel for the ICU at SGDH.Advertisements have been issued for eight consultants, ten medical officerss, a matron nursing position, six anaesthesia technicians and 20 staff nurses, all on one-year contract basis.
The Health Director had also assured the HC via an affidavit that once these positions are filled, the hospital would be fully operational, with proposals for regular posts pending government approval.
