MARGAO: Margao MLA and Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat on Tuesday warned that he will be compelled to take action along with fellow Madgaonkars, if the government fails to act against the growing menace of drunkards, prostitutes and drug addicts in the town.

Digambar after inspecting the station road and surrounding areas held a meeting with the District Collector and Police.

He said, “The authorities must immediately round up the beggars and homeless and accommodate them in the shelter homes till further arrangements are made to send them to their home states.”

The Mamlatdar of Salcete Prataprao Gaonkar meanwhile closed the gates of the old railway station to avoid the beggars and rag pickers taking safe haven.

In a meeting held with the South Goa Collector along with senior police officers, representatives of the railways, issues pertaining to nuisance created by drunkards, prostitutes and drug addicts in areas such as station road, Cine Lata, municipal building and garden were discussed and Margao MLA gave an ultimatum of 15 days for the authorities to act.

Digambar urged the Collector to direct the Excise Department to keep a strict vigil on all the liquor shops in the town to ensure that strict timings are followed.
