IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode, 22, spoke to a close friend over the phone hours before he was found dead in his hostel room on the institute’s Powai campus, sources have said.
According to sources, Wakode, a second-year student in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, told his friend during a phone call at around 2.30 pm that he had “made a mistake” and that his Thermodynamics examination had also not gone well.

The statement was reportedly made before investigators by the friend, who spoke to Wakode on the day of his death.
Wakode was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room last Friday. His death occurred hours after he was allegedly caught using a mobile phone to access ChatGPT during a mid-semester examination.
The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated by the authorities. The account of his conversation with his friend forms part of the information being examined as investigators seek to establish the sequence of events leading up to the incident.
The incident has also brought attention to the pressures faced by students in demanding academic environments, as well as questions surrounding academic integrity and the use of artificial intelligence tools during examinations.
