PERNEM: After issuing a warning to Morjim shack owners, the Tourism Department cracked the whip and seized beach beds, umbrellas, tables and chairs which were illegally placed on the beach, at Tembawadda.
The tourists were taken aback due to sudden action by police and there was a delay in carrying out the operation as some guests were having their breakfast.
The Tourism Department officials swung into action after some locals complained that shack owners had encroached on the beach giving it a cluttered and crowded appearance thereby creating a nuisance.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Tourism Gajanan Mahale and a large number of police personnel were deployed at the site to maintain law and order.
“Strict action will be initiated against those doing illegal business and such raids will continue throughout the season and material will be confiscated. Nobody can conduct business without obtaining permission from the Tourism Department,” Mahale added.
The pristine coastline of Goa lures tourists to enjoy the sun, surf, sand and shacks and beach beds are high in demand in these areas for those to spend quality time on the sandy shores.
