MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council on Tuesday cleared the illegal huts erected by migrants on the proposed new Mapusa bus stand project site.
The action was initiated following a memorandum submitted by local activists to the chief officer requesting him to demolish all the huts erected by the migrants on proposed new Mapusa bus stand project land.
In their memorandum, social activists Shekar Naik and Suryakant Chodankar had stated that the number of huts at the site is rising day by day; that the migrants were creating havoc in the vicinity; and that the huts were giving a bad image of Mapusa to the visitors, especially the tourists.
According to the memorandum, the migrants were also causing nuisance and harassing the commuters and tourists who come to Mapusa.
Acting on the memorandum, the Mapusa municipality demolished all the huts and cleared all the encroachments.
Meanwhile, when the two activists along with two video journalists had visited the project site on Monday, a migrant allegedly abused them with filthy language and attempted to assault the two activists and journalists with stones.
Following this, a complaint was lodged against the migrant at the Mapusa police station and the accused migrant was arrested late night under Sections 352 and 504 of IPC.
