In a first, GMC harvests organs of brain dead person

PANJIM: Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) on Monday created history at SOTTO Goa as doctors for the first time harvested organs from a brain dead donor last night. This is the first attempt made by GMC for organ donation and transplantation.

GMC dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said that the organs – heart, liver, lungs and two kidneys – were of a 21-year-man, who met with an accident on Thursday and was declared brain dead.

“The organs were harvested out of Goa to conduct live organ transplant in recipients outside the State,” Bandekar said.

The donated kidneys shall be transplanted to two recipients as per the sequential order in the SOTTO registry.

“History was made at SOTTO Goa, truly a proud moment for the people of the state of Goa,” Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said.

SOTTO was established in Goa, a registry allowing patients in need of transplants to register themselves on waiting lists. The registry had been launched last December.

So far 22 individuals in need of kidney transplants have registered. GMC, Healthway Hospital and Manipal Hospital are registered with SOTTO, according to Goa SOTTO office joint director Dr Preeti Varghese.

GMC has also commenced performing living donor transplants.
