In absence of sewerage network, septic waste from houses flows into agri fields in Davorlim

MARGAO: The village panchayat of Davorlim-Dicarpale has raised concerns over the continuous discharge of sewage and waste water from residential houses into agricultural fields. Following complaints from farmers, a joint inspection was conducted on Friday by the panchayat and the Health Centre-Curtorim, prompting a call for immediate action.

During the inspection, the team was shocked to witness the flow of domestic sewage into agricultural fields through drains and nullahs. This issue has emerged due to the absence of a functional sewerage network in the low-lying area, as the concerned department has failed to address the problem effectively.

Herculano Niasso, the Sarpanch of Davorlim-Dicarpale panchayat, revealed that numerous farmers engaged in agricultural activities near the panchayat office had complained about the sewage and waste contaminating their fields. “Farmers have reported health issues and difficulties in carrying out farming activities due to the sewage contamination of their once-fertile fields. We requested the Health Centre to conduct an inspection and take necessary measures to halt this problem,” he stated.

The responsibility now lies with the Health Centre, to act and provide relief to the affected farmers. The stench in the fields has become unbearable, said the Sarpanch. With approximately 150 houses in the area lacking a proper sewage network, sewage and waste water are being directly released into public drains, which empty into the nullah and eventually contaminate the fields.
