In a boost to India’s indigenous defence capabilities, Indian defence company IDMS Vigilant Def Technologies has developed a proof-of-concept anti-drone round for the AK-47 rifle under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
According to the company, the specially designed ammunition releases four projectiles with a single shot, significantly improving the rifle’s effectiveness against swarm and kamikaze drones. The anti-drone round is designed to function without requiring any modification to the standard AK-47 platform, making it easier to integrate into existing weapon systems.

The company said the innovation is aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of security forces in countering the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly low-flying swarm and suicide drones.
IDMS Vigilant Def Technologies also acknowledged the contribution of late former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, crediting him for encouraging greater participation of the private sector in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
According to the company, Parrikar’s push for indigenous defence production and innovation helped create an environment that enabled the development of homegrown technologies such as the new anti-drone ammunition.
The development marks another step in India’s efforts to strengthen self-reliance in defence manufacturing through the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and promote indigenous solutions for evolving security challenges.
