International drug lord Joao Pedro Duarte Oliveira Souza, who was arrested by Goa police, has been deported to his native country Brazil. Pedro, against whom the red corner notice was issued by the Interpol, was arrested in Goa on June 24, 2019 when he was found to be overstaying in the State.
The information was provided by CM Pramod Sawant to the question tabled by MLA Nilkant Halarnkar. This year, till June 30, total 30 cases are booked against foreigners for overstaying in the State. Sawant said Pedro, was one amongst the 4 foreigners, who were lodged in the newly inaugurated Detention Centre facility at Mapusa before being deported to his country on July 3, 2019.
Sawant said that since January, 2016 till July 14, 2019, 26 foreign nationals were deported by Goa govt, after they were arrested for staying illegally in Goa. These include 9 Russians, 3 British nationals, 2 each from Morocco, Swedish, Yemen and Ukraine. There is also 1 national from Brazil, Italy, Tanzania, Germany and Syria. Since 2016, till June 30, 2019, a total 169 foreigners were detained.
For the year, 2018, a total of 52 and during 2017, 55 foreign nationals were booked for overstaying in the state.
Sawant added that whenever foreigners are found staying beyond their visa, action against such foreigners is taken by the police dept under the appropriate sections of law.
“Upon disposal of the case and if convicted the foreign national is issued with deportation order under section 3(2) (c) of Foreigners Act 1946,” he added.
