PORVORIM: In a major submission, CM Pramod Sawant said the accused who are found to be involved in the narcotics related crime are hardcore and do not disclose the source of the drugs.
Sawant said that since 2014 till June 30, 2019, police have booked 679 people under the NDPS Act. For the current calendar year, 114 cases have been booked.
He was responding to the question tabled by Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco.
Sawant said the arrested accused persons are interrogated to find out the name of dealers, distributers, supplier and manufacturer of drugs.
“All accused who are found involved in the cases are arrested under appropriate sections of NDPS and thoroughly interrogated. However, it is seen that the accused in these cases are hard core and do not disclose the source of drugs,” he added.
The Home Minister said the cases under NDPS Act are booked on the specific input from the sources, following raids conducted.
On asked whether there are high tech laboratories that manufacture drugs (banned substances) in the State, he replied that “as far as Goa police department is concerned, no such incident has been reported in this regard and channel of intelligence has been activated.”
The data tabled in the House reveals an increase in the number of narcotic related cases. In 2014, a total of 54 cases were registered and this number went up to 61 in 2015 and 60 in 2016. 168 cases were registered in the year 2017 and 222 in 2018. Further, almost 64,000 gram of Ganja was seized in the last four years since 2016, while the seized charas quantity is 20,996.4 grams during that period.
