IPL 2026: KKR Officially Release Mustafizur Rahman Following BCCI Directive

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have officially released Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, following a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

In a formal statement, KKR confirmed that the decision was taken after receiving instructions from the BCCI, which oversees the IPL. The franchise stated that the release was carried out through due process and consultations, adding that the BCCI has assured KKR of permission to sign a replacement player in accordance with league regulations. Further details regarding the replacement are expected to be announced later.

The development was confirmed exclusively to India Today by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who clarified that the board had formally asked KKR to part ways with the Bangladesh international. Saikia said the decision was taken in light of recent developments and that the board had acted to prevent potential complications ahead of the new season.

Mustafizur had been signed by KKR for Rs 9.20 crore during the IPL 2026 mini-auction in December 2025. While the signing initially attracted attention for cricketing reasons, it soon became the subject of controversy. Objections were raised by sections of the political spectrum and certain groups, with criticism intensifying over broader regional and diplomatic concerns.

The issue gained further traction after public objections were voiced by political leaders, leading to increased scrutiny of the pacer’s participation in the league. Although the BCCI did not directly address the political reactions, it is understood that the move was taken as a precautionary step.

From a sporting standpoint, Mustafizur’s exit leaves KKR short of an experienced overseas fast bowler. However, the franchise is now expected to explore replacement options as preparations for IPL 2026 continue.
