Issue of sewage flowing into stormwater nullahs in Fatorda may persist until February

MARGAO: The issue of sewage flowing into stormwater nullahs within Fatorda may not get resolved until at least February as the completion of the new North Main Trunk Line project is pending. According to N Parsekar, the Managing Director of the Sewerage Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa (SIDCGL), the work is expected to finish by the end of February.

Speaking to the media after a recent meeting that was convened by Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira at the South Collectorate, Parsekar informed that the replacement work for the North main line is nearly complete, with only minor work remaining near the Osia complex.

The North main trunk line has been identified as the primary cause of sewage discharge into the nullahs near key landmarks such as the Collectorate building, South Goa District Hospital building and the Old Market circle.

Meanwhile, during this weekly meeting, the Environment Minister conducted a thorough examination of the ongoing sewage laying works in Navelim village and Ramnagiri in Sao Jose de Areal village.

During the meeting with senior officials from the SIDCGL, including Parsekar and General Manager (GM) Swapnil Desai, the Minister addressed concerns raised by a Navelim resident regarding the prolonged sewerage works in Navelim.

Following discussions, the SIDCGL MD Parsekar assured the Minister that the Navelim sewerage project would be completed by March 1, allowing for the smooth flow of sewage into the designated line. Additionally, SIDCGL officials committed to providing application forms for sewerage connections.

Regarding the problem of sewage discharge in Ramnagri locality, the Environment Minister expressed his concern over the rampant flow of sewage in the open from the colony. The SIDCGL officials blamed the Electricity Department for the delay, following which the Minister got Electricity Executive Engineer Diogo Coutinho to give a commitment to complete the power line within a stipulated deadline.
