BICHOLIM: The Bicholim Police arrested six persons for illegally transporting river sand in their trucks. According to the police, near Tople Restaurant, Mulgao, the accused persons were caught red-handed while transporting the river sand worth Rs 30,000 each in their trucks without having any transportation permission from the concerned authorities.
The accused were identified as Murtujasab Mujawar (30) from Andhra Pradesh, Amey Anil Kada (22) from Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, Anil Kowadkar (61), Avinash Gajanand Dhumak (30), Laxman Kadam (30) and Prathamesh Dhumak (27), all from Kudal, Maharashtra. The Bicholim police have registered an FIR against the six accused under section 379 and section 3 and 38 read with 62 (2) of Goa Daman and Diu Mines and Mineral Concession Rule 1985.

In spite of clear directives from the High Court of Bombay at Goa instructing the State government and police to crack down on illegal sand mining, the problem of illegal sand mining still persists. Last December, the Ugvem Gram Sangharsh Samiti had sent a letter to authorities with a list of individuals and locations involved in sand extraction and storage, but no action was taken.
