They accused the MLA and his councillors of spending money on the beach festival but having no money to pay labourers which has held up the pre-monsoon works.
Addressing reporters, D’Souza said, “It appears that the Vasco MLA and the ruling group have neglected the port town. This can be proved by the fact that there is no initiative to ensure that the pre-monsoon works are taken up in Vasco, especially in wards represented by the opposition group.”
He added, “I am not against the summer festival but I am surprised that the municipality made special provision to spend Rs 8 lakh for this festival but at the same time the issue of payment to labourers is not attended to.”
Councillors, including Neny D’Souza, Pascoal D’Souza and Sunita Landez, demanded that MMC not differentiate between the ruling the opposition councillors and provide equal labourers to all 20 councillors.
“Last year, they denied labourers for pre-monsoon works. I spent from my own pocket to do pre-monsoon works,” said MMC opposition leader Neny D’Souza.
D’Souza further warned to take to the streets with the people of Vasco and Mormugao if the increasing coal dust pollution issue is not addressed. “I am very surprised and have no clue why the Minister and MLA from Mormugao, as well as Vasco MLA, are quiet on the issue of coal pollution. Two days ago the people had to face extensive coal dust pollution after the storm hit the State; however the MLAs remained silent,” D’Souza said.
MMC Councillor Pascoal D’Souza has demanded a CBI inquiry into the garbage compactor scam which is presently being investigated by the Anti Corruption Bureau. He said CBI should take over the investigations. He was carrying a copy of the Herald edition that reported that the ACB has summoned Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida to record his statement in the garbage compactor scam.
