PANJIM: An elevator at the Junta House, which houses several government offices, has not been functioning for nearly a month, causing severe inconvenience not only to the office goers but mostly to the general public who visit the offices for availing different services.
The fourth lift of the Junta House broke down abruptly with the administration not in a hurry to repair it. Offices including BDO and Ombudsman located on the topmost – sixth floor are the ones most affected. The only relief in the entire mess is that most of the offices in the fourth building of the already dilapidated Junta House have been shifted to other places.
“I had to come to BDO’s office to apply for and later collect the income certificate. But I had to climb the stairs and walk down every time I came here,” an elderly citizen narrated.
BDO Gawas has the same grievance. He told Herald that minor repairs of the lift have not yielded any positive results. “It was repaired but broke down again. When it functions in the morning, it stops in the evening. The non-functioning of the only elevator has caused inconvenience to everybody including my staffers. There are elderly, disabled and even people with ailments coming to offices for different work,” he said.
It’s not the story of the lift alone. The poor maintenance of the lift and the building, and electrical wires popping out of meters is posing a danger to all.
