MARGAO: Khareband locals led by Councillor Mahesh Amonkar gheraoed the chief officer and other officials of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) over the inaction on the part of the civic body against an alleged illegal scrapyard in their locality.
It was the contention of the protestors that the scrapyard has become a waste dumping site as well as a risk for commuters, particularly motorists.
Amonkar questioned why the MMC has turned a blind eye even though the market inspector had allegedly informed the CO that the scrapyard has no trade licence. He also hit out at MMC Chairperson Lyndon Pereira of running to Fatorda for any minor issue but for failing to turn up for any inspection of the scrapyard despite multiple requests.
Amonkar lamented that he had written letters since August and personally followed up the matter but that MMC was dragging its feet allegedly due to ‘political’ pressure.t.
