PORVORIM: Efforts are on to get the State government to declare the ‘Patoianchem Fest’ to be celebrated by residents of Socorro on August 15, as a State festival.
Speaking to reporters, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said he has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Manohar Parriker to declare the event as a State festival.
“At present, residents contribute the money to organize this festival. But if the government declares the ‘Patoianchem Fest’ as a State festival, then it can be celebrated on a grand scale with financial assistance from the State government. This event also provides a platform for locals to showcase their talents,” said Khaunte.
Socorro Parish Priest Fr Santana Carvalho stated that traditional Goan food such as sanna, pudde, patoieo, chonne, and pez will be showcased at the Patoianchem Fest celebration. “People also will get an opportunity to witness ethnic Goan games like Godd’de (marbles), breaking of coconuts, etc, in addition to cultural programmes. Last year, we had received good response from the general public. Since a lot of expenditure is incurred to organize this festival, we have requested the State government to provide them with financial assistance to celebrate this event,” said Fr Carvalho.
