PERNEM: Garbage littered by the roadside in Pernem taluka is going unattended as the local authorities are busy collecting only dry garbage.
Except for three panchayats – Morjim, Mandrem and Arambol – all the other 17 village panchayats in Pernem taluka collect only door-to-door dry garbage. Unfortunately, all the dry garbage generated in the household reaches the dumping site of the panchayats, but a large portion of wet garbage is found dumped in the open.
The dry garbage that is collected, only includes plastic and paper waste, which is kept aside to give it to the garbage collector once a week, while rest of the garbage such as the wet waste, tyres, glass, clothes etc are being dumped by the roadside or in isolated areas, which goes unattended.
One such route is between Shirgal and Dhargalim junction. Similar situation is on the Korgao road via Parsem. Even though, the Arambol, Morjim and Mandrem Panchayat collect door-to-door wet and dry garbage, these villages too face the issue of garbage littered by the roadside.
“Goa has a waste management corporation for garbage management, but it has hardly managed to clean the State, especially the clearing of roadside garbage. Each panchayat should collect both dry and wet garbage and each taluka should have an independent garbage treatment facility to treat this garbage. Collection of only plastic dry garbage is not a solution,” Kishor Naik, a local said.
