MARGAO: Konkan Railways will celebrate ‘25 Years of Sadar Seva’ by stepping up its Swachh Bharat campaign. From May 26 to June 9, it will take steps to make Margao station a ‘zero waste station.’ To commemorate the occasion, an action plan booklet was released by B P Tayal, CMD/KRCL for the employees of KRCL.
All waste at the station will be converted to green manure or energy. A compost plant has been installed there for this purpose. KR aims to achieve ‘zero waste’ for all stations under its jurisdiction in Goa. It has also planned to install bio-toilets on all stations on KR routes. So far, bio-toilets have been installed at Kankavali, Sawantwadi, Chiplun, Karmali, Margao, Karwar and Byndoor stations.
KR also plans to impose a hefty fine on the pantry car or catering vendors if they dispose garbage in places other than a designated area.
Meanwhile, the Margao railway station is plagued with various issues, such as garbage problems, illegal smuggling of alcohol and cleanliness. The station’s custodians are also on the wrong foot when it comes to the overall security of the station premises. A round of the station property showed various gaps in the compound wall.
Under the condition of anonymity, a local informed that there were men who entered the station through the gaps in the compound wall and sold liquor openly to travellers. He said, “We had caught a man attempting to enter the station and taken him to task. After we threatened to report him to the police, he told us he has been doing this illegal trade for some time.”
He added, “There is a need for strict vigilance in such places. I hope Konkan Railways deters these activities.”
