MARGAO, NOV 9
Overnight incessant rains played spoil sport to Agriculture department’s ambitious Krishi Mahotsav which was scheduled to get underway at the SGPDA grounds here from Tuesday
The rains forced the Directorate of Agriculture to postpone the Mahotsav as the venue was inundated with rain water. With the rain Gods giving no respite till noon, the Agriculture officials had no option than to postpone the inauguration of the event.
A large number of farmers from the western ghats from the talukas of Sanguem, Sattari, Canacona, Quepem and Ponda had come to participate in the mela and were waiting for the formal inauguration of the mahotsav.
If the Director of Agriculture Satish Tendulkar is to be believed, around 2000 farmers from Sanguem, Canacona, Quepem and Sattari, besides Ponda are participating in the Krishi Mahotsav.
He said though all arrangements were put in place for the much-awaited Krishi mahotsav, the unseasonal rains affected the arrangements made at the venue and promised to protect the interests of the farmers participating in the event.
“The entire set up at the venue was left disturbed at the venue. We had no option than to postpone the inauguration”, he said.
The large number of farmers, who had come for display and sale of the produce from the hilly areas of the state were a disappointed lot. However, rains stopped later around noon raising hopes amongst the farmers about the commencement of the three-day mahotsav.
