PONDA: The Kundaim farmers on Monday demanded with the State government to repair the riverside bandharas at Chickal Payan, Kundaim to protect their paddy crop from submerging under water.

According to the farmers, their crops get submerged under saline water just at the time of harvesting in month of October due to flooding of river after heavy rainfall. The weak bandharas near riverside are breached at several places.

Since past two years they are facing losses as the bandharas are breached due to heavy rainfall and flooded river.

The farmers said, “They can’t bear the cost of repair and so the government should repair or reconstruct bandhara through its fund.”

Last year, the riverside bandhara was breached at several places due to heavy rainfall and flooding of river and due to this the crop was submerged. The farmers suffered heavy losses just at time of harvesting in the month of October.

Around 350 farmers are dependent on the paddy crop cultivation at Kundaim for their livelihood. Last year, they had suffered a loss of almost Rs 25 lakh due to crop damaged after heavy rain and breach of bandharas due to flooding of river.

The farmers said, “Every year they cultivate paddy and just at time of harvesting in month of October they face heavy losses due to rains which also leads to flooding of river and breach of bandharas.”

So the farmers are demanding to repair the river side bandharas to prevent entry of river water.
