Labour laws likely to be amended in Goa: Minister

Move to deter companies from sideling Goans in employment

PANJIM: Labour and Employment Minister Babush Monserrate on Thursday said that the State government will bring a bill to amend the labour laws in the next Assembly session against private companies violating employment or labour laws.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “Recently two companies issued advertisements for job recruitment outside the State. They had not taken permission to do so nor had they intimated it to the Labour Department.”

He said the State government is contemplating to increase the fine levied on companies which do not follow provisions of the Goa Labour Act which mandates that all new vacancies should be intimated to the local employment exchange and priority should be given to the pool of eligible job seekers registered with the employment exchange.

“The present fine is Rs 500 which will be hiked. We will come out with an amendment to the Goa Labour Act and bring a bill in the forthcoming session of the State assembly to increase the fine and also introduce some other measures which will act as a deterrent to such companies,” he said.

Monserrate said the companies should inform the employment exchange about the number of vacancies they have.

“’There are a lot of changes we are planning to bring in,” he said, adding a meeting in this regard will be held on June 6, 2024.

Last week, opposition parties had highlighted the issue of pharma companies advertising for posts in Goa at locations in other states and alleged that Goans were being deprived of the employment opportunities.
