MARGAO: The ‘labourer bazaar’ has moved to Govind Poi junction where one side road leads to Gandhi Market and the other to Cine Lata as the police patrol the area behind the Municipal building where the labourers used to gather earlier.
The large number of labourers gathering at the new junction do create problem for motorists specially those going to Gandhi market as the road leading to it is narrowed significantly and pickups find it difficult to maneuver.
At the new junction only the labourers are found and the people who used to sell lunch packets for them at the earlier place are not seen. There were at least three different families that used to sell lunch packets at the old place and they are not seen anywhere around the area now.
The labourers are mostly construction workers who were brought by contractors to do the work at a project but did not return to their native place after the project was completed and instead hang around in Margao waiting to be picked up for daily wages.
The labourers quote Rs. 650 per day as their charges but come down after bargaining with the average salary being Rs. 600 per day.
For a little over a month the police have begun patrolling the area behind Municipal building and in fact two constables are stationed there early morning to drive away the labourers gathering there.
