MARGAO: The next time you travel on the Rawanfond-Dicarpale road on the outskirts of Margao, don’t be surprised to find ornamental lamps switched on during daytime and off during the night. However, others have claimed that the lamps have been lying defunct for want of proper repairs and maintenance over the years, plunging the road stretch into darkness.
Indeed, these ornamental lamps were installed amidst much fanfare over half-a-decade ago by the Industrial Development Corporation under a centrally-sponsored tourism development scheme.
Sources in the know said the ornamental lamps costing lakhs of rupees have not been put to proper use on account of jurisdiction. While the IDC had installed the lamps under the Central Government scheme, they have been neglected over the question of maintenance.
Former Aquem-Baixo Sarpanch and Panch member Damu Naik admitted that the ornamental lamps have not benefited much in illuminating the road. He, however, said a solution will be worked out within the next eight days.
When contacted, Navelim MLA and Fisheries Minister, Avertano Furtado said that he has taken up the matter with the concerned departments to ensure that the lights are put to proper use.
“Though the IDC has installed the lamps, we have to decide the question of the department which would look after its maintenance,” Avertano said.
