MARGAO: Fomento Green on Wednesday said that work on the landfill site at Sonsodo will resume only after receiving clarifications from the Mines Department on transportation of mud from Sonsodo to villages beyond the municipal jurisdiction.
In another development, putting the acrimonious past, both the Margao Municipal Council and Fomento Green have agreed to jointly work together for the success of the waste treatment plant at Sonsodo. A monitoring committee meeting held on Tuesday underlined the need for the civic body and Fomento Green to work in close coordination in the interest of Margao city to rid the city of garbage.
When the issue of hill cutting and transportation of excavated soil, besides the construction of landfill site came up for discussion, Fomento Green CEO Sridhar Kamat said that he would resume work on the landfill site only after receiving certain clarifications from the Mines Department on mud transportation outside the municipal jurisdiction. Kamat is believed to have maintained that it cost huge money to mobilise manpower and machinery for hill cutting, adding that the company will suffer huge losses if work is abruptly stopped at the site.
When contacted, Kamat maintained that Fomento Green has obtained all the necessary permissions to carry out hill cutting and mud transportation. “We have only sought clarification from the Mines Department to transport the mud outside the municipal jurisdiction”, he said.
The Fomento CEO has also mooted a forum of citizens to explain to the people the importance of the Sonsodo waste treatment plant for the city in the long term.
The two sides also discussed the issue regarding execution of addendum to the draft concession agreement. Margao Municipal Chief Officer Deepali Naik said the civic body has submitted a copy of the addendum to the draft agreement for comments and suggestion. She said the draft agreement will be forwarded to the municipal lawyer for vetting after receiving a report from the PWD officials on the assessment of work done by Fomento at the new site.
