Large number of trees being chopped, compound walls demolished at Nagoa for road widening

Calangute: A large number of trees will be chopped and compound walls of houses demolished to facilitate the widening work of the Parra-Nagao road up to the Dream Circle by the Public Works Department (PWD).

Being undertaken at a cost of Rs 3.8 crore, the road widening work started on Wednesday.

With rise in traffic due to the new Mopa International Airport and expansion of the road from Mapusa to the Calangute coastal belt, Nagao has proven to be a major bottleneck, PWD officials said.

There has been a strong-felt need for widening of roads along this stretch of the road due to the rising tourist traffic coming from Mopa airport through the village, which is located between the two tourist hubs of Calangute and Anjuna.

The narrow road in Nagoa was causing constant traffic jams on the busy stretch and is being widened from the Nagoa Grande hotel. It is the only approach road for motorists driving down from Mapusa towards the Arpora-Nagoa-Calangute coastal belt.

“We have informed PWD minister Nilesh Cabral that there was a need to remove most of the bottlenecks as the traffic will continue to be on the rise. With the number of flights increasing, the traffic will also increase and the widening works will greatly help the general public as it will help in decreasing the number of road accidents,” Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said, while adding that “all the demolished compound walls will be reconstructed”.
