MARGAO: Stinking leachate from the Sonsoddo dump yard continues to flow onto the adjacent road, posing a health hazard to workers and commuters, even as the Margao Municipal Council struggles to find a solution to tackle the issue.
On Saturday, Camilo Barretto, Chairman of the MMC’s Sanitation Committee, paid a surprise visit to Sonsoddo, acting on complaints from workers engaged at the site.
After observing the mess, Barretto expressed
frustration and admitted that the situation at the site was very bad as the leachate running off from the wet waste accumulated in the old treatment plant causes major problems to the workers of the civic body.
Barretto also told Herald that a file pertaining to the construction of a road at the site was missing and demanded an FIR to be registered against the concerned officials for negligence.
“Untreated wet waste
piling up at Sonsoddo has resulted in the flow of leachate into the roads and gutters. There is no way out for this liquid and it stagnates here,” he said, adding that it inconveniences the garbage truck drivers.
Speaking about the
missing file, the councillor said that the Sanitation Committee was in shock about the lapse.
“The file has been missing for a very long time and the Sanitation Committee has already demanded that the MMC should file a police complaint against the concerned officials, for negligence,” he said.
Barretto said that he will not tolerate any more messes at the Sonsoddo site. “I am ready to help in arranging the required materials to build the road here on a personal level if the civic body fails to take the issue seriously,” he claimed.
It may be recalled that the Sanitation Committee had a lengthy discussion for a temporary solution to stop the flow of leachate onto the adjacent road, and the construction of a tank was also suggested, but no action has been seen as yet.
