Lifeguards on strike, CM refuses to intervene

PANJIM: Hours after the lifeguards resorted to a three-day strike protesting the government’s failure to honour its assurance, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar refused to intervene in the matter stating that the lifeguard service has been outsourced to a private company.

Parsekar said that if the lifeguards’ demands are genuine then they should approach the Labour Court for justice and not the government.
“Government should not interfere in the matter. I feel, government should not poke its nose in everything,” Parsekar told media persons on Friday.
The Chief Minister alleged that some union leaders, for the sake of publicity, are instigating lifeguards to the unwarranted strike. “They should approach Labour Court for justice. We have outsourced the work to a private company and hence we cannot intervene,” he stated.
Lifeguards on Friday morning began a three-day strike leaving beaches across the State unmanned.  The lifeguards did not report to duty in the morning and gathered outside the Tourism Department office.
“State government has forced us to take this extreme step. We didn’t want to strike but this is the only way we can grab their attention,” All India Trade Union Congress, secretary Suhas Naik said.
