QUEPEM: The Electricity Department workers along with their union leader on Friday gheraoed the Curchorem Electricity Department officials over the new circular issued by the government to the linesmen.
The new circular states that the linesmen will have to undergo a practical examination of climbing the poles to prove their ability and workability.
“This is very much harassment meted out by the Electricity Department to the loyal linesmen who work day and night in the rains and during natural calamities,” said President of Employees Union Carlos Faleiro.
“We are against this circular which doesn’t support the workers equally according to their age. So we are against this new policy of the government. We came to protest against this circular in Curchorem, which is Power Minister Nilesh Cabral’s Constituency,” he added.
“The new circular states, on February 13, pole-climbing practical examination of staff will be held. The circular also warns that lapse on the part of linesmen to attend will be viewed seriously. It is against the hard working employees of the Electricity Department,” Faleiro added.
“After discussion with the engineer we got a positive response,” said Faleiro.
Secretary of Employees Union Awvell de Silva said that such situation will arrive again and again. If some of you, who have not affiliated to the union, in near future should join. This is not the only thing why we need union, but for safety and better future.
