PORVORIM: Ignoring concerns voiced by Saligao MLA Kedar Naik during the recent monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly about garbage from Sonsoddo being transported to the Saligao Waste Treatment Plant (WTP), the trips have continued.
In a show of frustration, residents intervened on Saturday, halting the garbage trucks carrying waste and spilling leachate all along Pilerne’s narrow roads.
The trucks were found to be ferrying waste from the Sonsoddo garbage treatment plant in Salcete. Ajay Govekar, Deputy Sarpanch of Pilerne, criticised the presence of the trucks on the cramped roads, while residents were particularly agitated over the leakage of foul-smelling leachate. A formal complaint has been filed with the Goa Waste Management Corporation, with engineer Dheeraj Chodankar summoned to the scene by the locals. Among those present were ZP member Sandeep Bandodkar, Saligao BJYM president Karan Govekar, Sayaji Rane, and other villagers. Govekar assured residents of an official complaint submission on Monday.
Expressing anger, ZP member Bandodkar condemned the practice of trucks navigating Pilerne’s narrow roads. Govekar asserted that such actions will not be tolerated by the local community.
The locals halted four garbage trucks on Saturday.
