MAPUSA: The residents and Devasthan Committee of Babreshwar temple have strongly objected to setting up of a sewage pumping station in their Gaurawado in Calangute.
They have threatened protest if authorities do not shift the pumping station from Gaurawado.
On Tuesday, on inspecting the proposed pumping station site, the residents learnt that the contractor would be restarting the construction work of the pumping station. The construction work of the station was stopped for the last three months when the locals objected to the same on ground that it would pollute water and air in the locality.
The residents claim that the sewage pumping station would contaminate the wells located in the surrounding and as well as the flow of sewage would cause the area stink. This, they argue, would cause inconvenience to them as well as tourists since the proposed area for the pumping station is located on the main road and at a prime spot.
The residents and Devashthan committee says that they have already given alternative land for building the pumping station at Naikawado in Calangute. “However, the authorities want to have the station at Gaurawado,” a local said.
The residents and committee members have now threatened protest if the authorities do not shift the pumping station from Gaurawado.
Meanwhile, the residents of Naika vaddo had also objected to setting up of the pumping station in their ward, pointing out that the location is a residential area.
