MARGAO: Opposing the hike in price of pao with effect from October 2, Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat on Thursday demanded that “Goenchem Daiz” or a special scheme be implemented to provide relief to the traditional bakers.
Speaking to Herald, Kamat also said there is a fact in the claims made by the traditional bakers. However, this situation could have not been taken shape if the “Goenchem Daiz” scheme was implemented by the BJP government.
“I am of the strong opinion that the price of the pao should not be raised, as it is one of the essential commodities of Goans. Earlier also the bakers had taken the decision to increase the price,” he said.
Kamat informed that many years back the government had prepared a scheme called “Goenchem Daiz” (Heritage of Goa), which was the first scheme in India under the Social Welfare Department of Goa, prepared in consultation with stakeholders at grassroots level, to extend State support and uplift about 80,000 engaged in about 600 typically Goan traditional occupations.
“Unfortunately this scheme has never been implemented by the BJP government. The poders would have got support for door to door delivery of bread, if implemented,” Kamat said.
He also said that he had raised the issue pertaining to traditional bakers in the Assembly session early.
