Margao: Two women and a Hindustan Petroleum technician were grievously injured on Thursday afternoon when an LPG gas cylinder exploded at their home in Quepem.
The victims were rushed to the Primary Health Centre in 108 ambulances, but were later shifted to the District Hospital in Margao for treatment as they had suffered extensive burn injuries, police said.

Police said that Valencia Fernandes(32), a resident of Sonarbhat noticed a gas leak from her LPG cylinder and called the technician. While the HP technician Sheikh Abdul Rehman (50) was repairing the nozzle of the gas cylinder, the pin broke off and the gas leak was exacerbated. There was an open fire nearby, and the leaking LPG began to burn and caused the cylinder to explode. A fireball briefly engulfed the kitchen during the explosion and caused the two women and the technician to sustain 20 to 30 per cent burns on their legs. The other woman who was injured was identified as Treza Miranda, also a resident of Sonarbhat.
“The technician was unaware that there was a stove burning in the room adjacent to the kitchen. When the cylinder started leaking, the gas reached the other room and instantly caught fire.
“The three people had a very lucky escape as they could have even lost their lives in such a blast,” said a policeman from the Quepem team.
