CURCHOREM: Three policemen had a fortunate escape as an electricity pole with live cables along with a branch of a mango tree came crashing down a few feet away from their police control room van, at around 1 pm, near the railway over bridge at Khamamoll, Curchorem on Sunday.
According to eyewitnesses, the electric pole fell just about 10 meters in front of the police vehicle.
When contacted, the three policemen who were in the vehicle confirmed that the pole fell just in front of their vehicle. They said the driver of the vehicle jammed the brakes and the vehicle came to a halt just in time. A branch of a mango tree broke off and fell on the wires and with the force two electricity poles broke, snapping and bringing live cables in the middle of the road. Traffic was disrupted for some time and was diverted via the old ITI road. The electricity department disconnected the power supply to the entire area to avoid any disaster.
Meanwhile the Curchorem Fire Station Officer (FSO) Dilip Gauns informed that they received 30 calls on Sunday apart from 32 calls on Saturday. “Trees uprooted at many places and traffic was disrupted for more than 2 hours,” he said.
At Cotombi-Paroda a huge teak tree fell on the house of Parwar and the estimated damages are in the region of Rs 55,000. Five huge trees fell on the Guddi-Paroda road and traffic was blocked for more than two-and-a-half hours. Trees also fell and blocked the Xinc-Xelvona, Xeldem, Chandor-Cotta roads which were cleared later on,” informed Gauns.
