MARGAO: Trinamool Congress’ (TMC) Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) on Wednesday demanded that a National Christian University be established in Goa.
He raised the issue during the ongoing Parliament session, but could not be debated following the adjournment of the House.

He argued that in order to preserve culture, script, language through institutions of higher education there is a need for a Christian University in India and it should be established in Goa, as the state is an educational hub and has a majority Christian population.
“To build a Christian Indian Nationalism anchored in constitutional values and impart Christian value education and culture there is a need for this Christian University,” Faleiro said.
The MP opined that the establishment of Christian University will help create the kind of education where a generation will think and behave independently, and it will help create a strong basis of social sciences for society’s development.
According to TMC MP, the university can also cater to higher standards of teaching-learning, integrity and focus on newer disciplines with international collaborations, and it will further help to prepare students and contribute towards administration and policy making, since few Christians are in civil services.
“The university can create a support system of Catholic doctors, lawyers, planners, social scientists, administrators, strategists and citizens to help in nation building,” he added.
He said Goa has a substantial Christian population and has a highly literate population and an educational hub. Goa has just one university.
According to Faleiro, the Constitution provides for the cultural and educational rights of the minorities under Articles 29 and 30. Article 29 is general protection to the minorities to conserve their language etc. Article 30 deals with the rights of the minorities to establish institutions of their choice.
