MA in women’s studies expects more applicants

PANJIM: After a successful maiden year, the two-year women’s studies MA programme at Goa University (GU) is expecting a good number of applications from graduates in the coming academic year 2016-17.

The first batch of eight students pursuing their masters under the Centre for Women Studies will complete their course next year.
“The course acquaints students with a range of academic and life experience topics. Issues on women’s history; feminist thoughts; gender development and the State; gender and marginality; gender, human rights and law; politics of discrimination, health, welfare and equality; violence; gender, human rights and law; empowerment and political processes, are amongst several subjects,” Shaila D’Souza, heading the centre told Herald.
She said the focus is essentially on social construction of gender while also educating them on women’s movements in India and around the world.
With Goa witnessing increasing number of crimes/violence against women, the faculty has included a subject on Goa specific issues in addition to research methodology as mandatory requirements.
The current batch was exposed to ground realities to learn hands on as also by observation and participation. D’Souza said that students were placed in the Department of Women & Child, NGOs working in the women’s sector and charity organizations as a part of field work-skills and practice.
