Madel residents call for police action against illegal gambling dens

MARGAO: Residents of Madel have expressed their dissatisfaction with the local police for their alleged inaction concerning the proliferation of illegal gambling dens in and around their area, with no fear of the law.

The residents referred to a complaint filed by their municipal ward councillor, Francis Joanes, with the Fatorda Police regarding these unlawful activities. They also mentioned several verbal complaints made over the phone, where they sought the support of the police to curb these activities.

The residents questioned why the police had not taken any action despite being provided with information regarding multiple locations where

such illegal gambling was taking place.

Savio Dias, in a complaint filed with the South Goa Superintendent of Police (SP) in April 2023, stated, “It must be known to your office that dice gambling (Ghodghoddo) has been continuously taking place in the Old Market Tinto area at Fatorda for quite a long time. Recently, another gambling den has emerged at Madel, on the bundh behind the vegetable shop at the start of the Ring Road along the Margao – Colva road.”

Dias further added, “As a concerned citizen, I wish to bring to your notice that along with Matka bookies, this ‘Ghodghoddo’ business has turned our Old Market area into a gambling

den, with Goan youth falling victim to these illegal activities.”

Dias urged the police to investigate the matter and take decisive action against those involved, in order to put an end to the rampant illegal gambling dens in their area.

He emphasized that only the intervention and action from the police could

 effectively curb these illegal activities.
